Working Principle of Radar Level Meter and Factors Affecting Signal

Table of Content [Hide]

Radar level meter is a high-precision instrument that uses microwave technology to measure liquid level without contact. It is widely used in storage tanks, reactors and other containers in the petroleum, chemical, electric power, food and other industries. Its working principle is to transmit microwave signals through antennas. After the signals encounter the surface of the measured medium, they are reflected back. The instrument determines the liquid level by calculating the time difference between the transmitted and received signals.
Factors affecting the signal strength of radar level gauge:
    1. Medium characteristics
The dielectric constant of the medium is a key factor affecting the signal strength. The higher the dielectric constant (such as water), the stronger the reflected signal; the medium with a low dielectric constant (such as light oil) has a weaker reflected signal. For low dielectric constant media, it may be necessary to select a high-frequency radar or a special antenna design.
    2. Installation location and environment
Improper installation location will cause false echo interference. Avoid installation near feed ports, agitators and other locations where interference may occur. At the same time, obstacles and internal structures in the container (such as heating coils) will also affect signal propagation.
    3. Process conditions
Harsh working conditions such as high temperature, high pressure, steam, and dust will affect microwave propagation. High temperature resistant models should be selected in high temperature environments; waveguide installation should be considered when there is a lot of steam.
    4. Instrument parameter settings
Appropriate signal processing parameters (such as filter settings and echo curve thresholds) are crucial for signal recognition. Improper parameter settings may cause effective signals to be filtered or interference signals to be misjudged.
To obtain the best measurement results, the appropriate radar frequency (high or low frequency) should be selected according to the specific working conditions and ensure correct installation. The instrument parameters should be set reasonably, and guided wave radar technology can be considered for special working conditions. By comprehensively considering these factors, the measurement accuracy and reliability of the radar level meter can be significantly improved.
